Seeing 'Sepet' with Ain last week had reaffirmed my convictions that if you wholeheartedly do something with enough keikhlasan. It would definitely get you somewhere. And in Sepet's case that somewhere was into the hearts and mind of those who had watched it. The honesty of the director, the whole crew of actors shines through in this movie as you watch and digest each scene with devoted fascination.
But, I’m not going to tell you about the story, you have to watch it yourself. This post is intended to share my thoughts as I went out the cinema that day; In Malaysia it is unfortunate that movies like this don’t get made every year. What am I trying to say is that if you ever seen a movie produced in this country for the past 5 years you could see that how dire is our need for movie makers who got the balls to tell their stories with similar candor.
Right now, the people who are in control of the industry is a group of people who believes that a formula that worked well 10 years ago, would work as well 10 years down the road. And unless bankruptcy is in the line for them, my advice to you is to brace yourself for more uninspiring, insipid & mentally challenging malay movies in the near future.
Let me present my case. Recently I’ve watched this movie By Prof. Razak Mohaideen called ‘7 Perhentian’. It is about a failed husband/businessman travels to JB with a dead body in a trunk who meets the same mysterious lady on each of the 7 stops on his travel to JB from KL. Pretty intriguing is it not? Not if you watch the movie. This movie might as well be called “Pandulah kereta Hyundai melalui lebuhraya Plus, bila berhenti tu minumlah Air Peace Cola”
That shows that only in Malaysia where you have a Film Professor directing an inane excuse for product placements as a movie and an advertising agency executive directing an honest one.
Hmm.. cakap betul2 ni cerita romantik ke cerita komedi ke..citer seram
Most of the budget of this was spent on renovating a Mental Hospital into a top class resort
I'll be looking like this too if I was in this piece of crap.
